L Arginine and Blood Pressure: Grams a Day, a Small Drop

Quick answer

In a pooled analysis of 11 trials with 387 people, oral L-arginine at 4 to 24 g a day was followed by an average drop of 5.39 mm Hg systolic and 2.66 mm Hg diastolic. The VapoCept panel lists 200 mg, about 5% of the lowest dose studied. It is not a blood pressure treatment.

The numbers01

Does L-arginine lower blood pressure?

At gram doses, the average was a small drop, not a treatment effect.

A meta-analysis pooled 11 randomized trials with 387 people taking 4 to 24 g a day. Against placebo, systolic pressure fell 5.39 mm Hg and diastolic 2.66 mm Hg (Dong 2011, Oral L-arginine and blood pressure meta-analysis).

The proposed route02

How might arginine affect blood vessels?

The idea is that the body makes nitric oxide from arginine, which relaxes vessel walls.

That is a proposed mechanism, studied mostly in exercise and blood pressure. NIH's exercise review found arginine usually did not change nitric oxide or blood flow (NIH ODS, Exercise and athletic performance (health professional)), so even the route is unsettled.

Four of the seven lines (two arginine, two citrulline) feed the proposed nitric oxide route: arginine, or citrulline turned into arginine, is the raw material for nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessel walls. Studies use grams a day (arginine 2,000 to 24,000 mg, citrulline 6,000 to 8,000 mg), mostly for blood pressure and exercise. The listed amounts are 100 to 200 mg.

Medicines03

Is it safe to combine arginine with blood pressure medicine?

Ask your pharmacist or doctor first, because the effects might add together.

Mayo Clinic says arginine might lower blood pressure, so blood pressure drugs, nitrates or sildenafil might push it too low (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine).

The 200 mg line04

What does this mean for the arginine in VapoCept?

The listed amounts are a small fraction of the studied range, and no study tested the capsule.

One 200 mg line is 5% of the 4 g low end, and 400 mg would be 10% (our arithmetic). See the dose math page and the medicines guide. If a clinician agrees, the packs are below.

FAQ05

VapoCept questions people ask

How much does L-arginine lower blood pressure?

A pooled analysis of 11 trials found an average drop of 5.39 mm Hg systolic and 2.66 mm Hg diastolic against placebo. Those people took 4 to 24 g a day. Results vary by person, and arginine is not a treatment for high blood pressure.

What dose of arginine was used in blood pressure studies?

The pooled trials used 4 to 24 g of L-arginine a day. The lowest dose, 4 g, is 20 times the 200 mg arginine line in the VapoCept panel. We found no blood pressure study of such a small amount.

Should I check my blood pressure if I take arginine?

If you take blood pressure medicine, ask your clinician whether to track readings. Mayo Clinic warns that pressure might fall too low when arginine is combined with certain drugs. A simple home log helps your clinician see changes.
